Junno knew it as soon as he fell--something was wrong with his back. Pain laced through his back, running down his legs and up his spine. He stifled his shout, shoving his fist into his mouth, and biting so hard, he drew blood.

“Stop, stop, stop,” cried the director. “Are you alright, Taguchi-san?”

“Yes, sir, just give me a minute.” He tried to sit up, but his muscles trembled with the effort and it felt as though fire was racing through his skin; stars exploded in front of his eyes. He fell back as a small sob escaped his lips. What’s wrong with me he thought, frantically.

“Can we get a medic over here?”

The rest of KAT-TUN took the break to go off on their own with glances back towards to Junno, as did most of Kanjani8, with the exception of Ohkura, who came over to Junno and knelt down by his friend’s side.

“Are you okay?” he asked, gently placing his hand on his shoulder. “What happened? Can you stand up?”

“Oh, I’m fine. I’m just resting for a minute,” Junno said, a small smile attempting to grace his face. “I think I’ve torn something in my back, though.”

“Can you get up?” Junno shook his head, gasping when it sent spikes of pain racing down his spine. Medics soon rushed to his side, questioning over and over again. After surveying the situation, they decided the best option was to take Junno to the hospital. “Backs are a tricky thing,” a medic muttered. Ohkura was called back to go over the next scene, but promised Junno he would visit. An ambulance was called, and Junno continued to lie on the stage floor during the wait, trying to crack jokes to ease the tension and get his mind off the pain.

The rest of the DreamBoys cast stood around, gawking when they placed Junno on the stretcher, crying out in pain when they jostled him too roughly. He reassured the rest of KAT-TUN that he would be back in no time, that it was no big deal; but they told him not to worry about it. When they lifted him away, it was as though the excitement had passed and everyone went back to work, leaving Junno scared and alone in the back of the ambulance.

The next few days were a haze of pain, anesthetics, an operation to fix something in his back and blurry faces that moved around the room, as though they were floating along as ghosts. He was told he had seriously injured his back and would have to stay in the hospital for several more weeks so they could keep an eye on it, as well as for recuperation.

He didn’t have many visitors, mostly family and a few friends trickled through, wishing him a speedy recovery, not to strain himself too much, and take care. Even after it had been a week, the rest of KAT-TUN did not come to see him. He knew they were busy with practice, but he didn’t see why someone couldn’t have called to see how he was doing.

He was told Ohkura stopped by a few times, but he didn’t remember. Apparently Junno made jokes that made sense, and had the nurses in stitches. He didn’t remember that either, but the nurses still called Junno their favorite patient, and always lavished much attention upon him.

Two weeks went by, still without a single sign of KAT-TUN. Ohkura kept telling him that they were very busy, and asked about him every so often, promising they would come see him as soon as they had time off to do so. Junno would nod and smile and look away into the corner of the room, while half joking that they probably didn’t even miss him

He was alone and in the middle of trying to shift into a more comfortable position when there was a soft knock on the door as it slid open, revealing Kame, with the rest of KAT-TUN behind him.

“Hi!” Junno said, waving them in. They filtered in, Kame and Ueda taking the chairs, Jin resting against the windowsill, Koki stood in the corner, while Maru walked around the room, looking at all the medical instruments, exclaiming “Awesome!”

“How are you feeling?” Kame asked, looking him up and down.

“Better, now, thank you,” he said, beaming.

“When will you get out?” Koki asked.

“In a little while longer, I think. They need to do another surgery to repair something.”

They spent the next half hour talking about what had been going on at work, what stupid things Jin had done while Junno was away, and what Junno had to look forward to when he got out. Jin stole a rubber glove and blew it up into a balloon. Kame stole it from him when he started hitting Junno with it and kept it until they left.

The next couple of hours was spent talking about this and that, keeping Junno’s mind occupied with inconsequential things. Maru snuck out at one point, getting outside food for everyone. They bickered and bantered back and forth; the nurse came in a few times to tell them to keep it down. She blushed furiously when Jin took her hand and told her they would be quieter.

They stayed for most of the day, and only left when they had to go back to work that night. They made promises they would come back the next time they were free.

“You understand…the schedule…” Kame said.

Junno smiled, “I know. Thanks for coming today.”

Shortly after their departure, Ohkura wandered in.

“What are you smiling about? They give you more drugs?”

“They really care about me!”

“Who?”

“KAT-TUN.”

“Oh. Really? I guess you’re like the dysfunctional family in Johnny’s. Unless one of you gets close to dying will you admit anything.”

“I didn’t almost die!”

Ohkura laughed. “What are those?” he asked, pointing to several bags resting against the wall.

“They brought me gifts,” he said with barely contained excitement.

“What’s in them?”

“Dunno. Give them to me.”

Ohkura gathered the bags and placed them on the roll-away table. Junno opened the first one. It was from Jin and contained several dirty magazines. Blushing, Junno placed the bag beside his bed.

“For safe keeping, huh?” Ohkura teased.

The next gift was from Ueda and was a new video game he had been wanting for a while. “So you don’t get too bored and annoy the staff,” read the card. He opened Maru’s next, which was a couple books filled with comic strips, such as Calvin and Hobbes translations. Ohkura handed him Kame’s next. He had given him a video tape of Kame doing Junno’s choreography for the musical, as well as the steps, script, and other things on paper. Lastly, Koki’s gift was a bag filled with his favorite snacks, something Junno didn’t even think Koki knew.

“That was very nice of them,” Ohkura said, slightly stunned at the considerate gifts they had given Junno. “I told you they cared.”

“I must be dying.”
